I have icons on my desktop! They have caused viruses...can anyone tell me how to get rid of them?

Today 3 ' sites' icons appeared on my desktop, at the same time I am being bombarded with Virus alert messages, and I am getting pop ups from Malaware to persuade me to buy their anti virus stuff-does anyone know how I can just stop all these messages from appearing.
