I have squamous atypia, should I be worried?
It means you have HPV. If you are young (which you are since you are considering childbearing), the chances are about 90% that you will clear the virus on your own within two years. The best thing you can do is take care of yourself the same way you would if you were fighting a cold and get the pap smear as recommended so that it can be monitored. You do NOT need to be scared. There is NO immediate danger. IF in a year, the cells are still abnormal, you will still be able to wait and see if it clears or you may elect to treat the cells which is not terribly pleasant but also not dangerous. The chances that this will develop into a problem are slim and it would take quite a number of years. Just take care of yourself and know that you should keep an eye on it. You will be fine. Your mother's case has nothing to do with yours. You both have HPV and it's incredibly common. There's some small indication that the inability to fight off the virus may have a genetic component, but age is a bigger factor than genetics. Both of you need to monitor your situations with pap smears. Don't let fear keep you from doing that. IF there is a problem, it is very treatable when monitored and caught early.
