Is there any place to get help with outstanding hospital bills?

Last year, I had my gall bladder removed. It was a manditory surgery, meaning I have the surgery or die. I had no health insurance and because of the job I had, and the fact that I was not willing to lie, I was not able to recieve state aid. My church paid the smaller bills for me. I tried paying the remaining bills about $25 a month but most of the bills were still sent to collections and one was sent to a lawyer and I had to go to court. I missed one payment with the lawyer and now they have garnished my checking account for the full amount. I am stuck with a -$4,000 balance in my checking account and I want to curl up in a ball and cry. Is there any organization that provides istance for people with outstanding hospital bills? I feel like my life has been screwed up just because I had surgery to live.
